Gregory Ayriyan is an ethnic Armenian composer based out of Moscow, Russia.
He was born in Baku, U. S. S. R. (now Azerbaijan) in 1964. He began studying music at the age of 7 years and finished his education at the Baku Conservatory in 1987. Gregory was forced to leave him homeland at the onset of the Nagorno-Karabakh war as tensions were high between ethnic Armenians and Azeris during this time (sadly, this situation still exists with no resolution in sight). He escaped to Armenia first, and them immigrated to the United States as a refugee along with his family members.
Gregory began composing in earnest in 1995 and won two prestigious awards in Rhode Island for his compositions in 1997 and 2000. He also began making short films which have been featured in film festivals in Cuba, Mexico, and Armenia as well as having his work shown on PBS in America. His films were awarded at the Cine Pobre Festival in 2005 and 2006.
Now residing in Moscow, Russia, Gregory works with a symphony orchestra and plays a few solo concerts occasionaly performing works of his favorite composers, such as J. S. Bach, Bela Bartok, Igor Stravinsky, Maurice Ravel. He also enjoys the work of such jazz luminaries as Miles Davis, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, as well as rock and fusion musicians like Led Zeppelin and John McLaughlin (guitarist of the Mahavishnu Orchestra).
